You may well have heard the expression ‘The Money Is in the List’ before but probably have never given it much thought. Yet in the world of the internet and online businesses, this is more than just a mere expression. For if you were to apply the wisdom of this phase into your e-business, not only would it increase the amount of income your online business produces but also the ease with which to get this income.
So why is having a list so important to an e-business’s success? And what type of list are we referring to here, aka To-Do list, list of suppliers, etc? Well to answer the latter question, the list to which I am referring to is a list of all (or large portion) of the customers to whom your business has served. The crucial part of this list is having some details from which you’d be able to contact (or update) your customers on a regular basis. So a list containing either all your customer’s telephone numbers, physical addresses or e-mail addresses would suffice.
So why is having such a list crucial to a business’s success? Well the ultimate purpose of any business (be it online or offline) is to make a profit for its owners, etc. Now let’s assume that you happen to own your own online business, writing and selling eBooks on a passion of yours; let’s say Golf. Now suppose you have just released a brand new eBook. What would be the best way to let others with similar passion for Golf knows about your new product. Well you could do what many authors, etc do which is to go online and mass-market your product via social media, SEO, etc. Don’t get me wrong, this is useful and would attract a new audience.
Yet let’s assume that you happen to have a list of all your previous customers (those who purchased your other Golf-related products). Right from the moment you put your new eBook out there, you already have a list of potential customers, all of whom share a passion for the subject (in this case Golf) and whom many of which would probably purchase the eBook straight away.
Fortunately if you have no idea on how to build up a list of previous and potential customers, than the following several steps explains how to go about it:
- Go to either Aweber, FeedBlitz, etc and sign up. Both these parties operate online and for small fee, will allow interested persons to subscribe to your list, as well as host your list for you. They would even allow you to send out the same e-mail to everyone on your list at once.
- Once you set up your mailing list, now is the time to get a bit savvy and try to attract the right sort of person onto your mailing list. Most list builders do this by creating a free report, etc and sending it out to the customer for free in return for their e-mail address, etc.
- Put this free report on all the websites, forums, etc where your ideal customer would hang out. So if your customer is a Golf enthusiast, place the free report, etc (naturally on the subject of Golf) on golfing forums, etc.
- Sit back and watch your list grow!
Whilst list building can take its time, trust me when I say that it is well worth the effort. Many online entrepreneurs who followed this business model now have thousands of relevant customers on their list. As such they can make a profit very quickly from any new business product they produce by merely clicking a button and sending the offer out to their mailing list.
So imagine what such a list could do for your business! It would pretty much be like having your own personal ATM!
